Introduction to the Blogging World

Blogging_Banner_1Step 1: Introduction to the Blogging World

There are two basic components of a blog: a domain name and a web host.

These two things are like the building blocks of your blog, without both of them together, there is no blog.

Choose a Domain Name

When I first started looking into creating a blog I had no idea what any of this terminology meant. So let me explain it to you in the most practical, user friendly way I can- it is the url/web address of your blog. Mine is “laurassweetspot.com”. The very best thing you can do for yourself and your blog is to choose a domain name with a “.com”. You have many options including .de, .us, .net, .co, .uk. Those are all national addresses whereas “.com” is international. You want your blog to be GLOBAL so that the world is its’ audience. Chose a “.com”how-to-start-a-blog

What comes before the “.com” is equally important too. You want it to be concise and easy to remember. Most importantly you want it to summarize what your site is about. My domain name is the perfect example of what NOT to do. It’s called Laura’s Sweet Spot, but here I am talking to you about how to start a blog- not related to anything sweet at all. I didn’t think through the possibility of creating content other than that related to baking when I chose my domain name. Don’t do what I did. Be 100% positive that your name will work for your purposes.

Choose a Web Host

Purchasing a web host is like renting an apartment. It’s where you keep all your blog information. You pay the web host company to store all your blogs’ information so that visitors can access your website. All websites are hosted somewhere. You need to choose where you would like yours to be. Choose carefully though! Make sure you use a reputable company rather than cheaping out and going with a free one. A good host makes for a better blogging experience.

I currently use HostGator. I like it very much and have never had a problem with it. They have great customer service and have always been able to help me out of a jam when needed, sometimes even with non-hosting related problems.

Once you choose your domain name and set up your web host, creating your blog is a very quick and easy process. I’ll show you exactly how to do that in the next step.

Note: Some of the products that I link to are affiliate links and I will earn a commission off of them should you chose to make a purchase through my link. I am not simply recommending them solely for my benefit- I can fully attest to the quality of all of these products since they are the ones I use myself. They are each highly regarded in the community of bloggers.
