These are all items that at some point or another have made an appearance in my pantry. It’s always good to keep a nice selection of healthy products available in your home. I find that if my cupboards and pantry are bare of any natural-type foods then I resort back to processed/packaged meals and snacks. That’s okay to do from time to time of course (we can’t always be on top of things and nobody is perfect). But, the better your pantry looks whole-foods wise, the better your meals will too.
I’ve listed the items in food categories just for the sake of organization. Some of these things can be found at your local grocery store, but most of them will probably have to be ordered online. For me, almost everything is a specialty item since I live in Germany, haha. How easy it is for you to get your hands on this stuff totally depends on where you live.
When I have to special order something I always use either Vitacost, Amazon, or Nuts.com. I find that between the three I can ALWAYS find what I am looking for, no matter how obscure I think the item might be.
The more health food you start to buy, the more you start to notice some top brands. I find that Bob’s Red Mill has a lot of really great products (mostly grains and flours). Navita Naturals also has an awesome selection (nuts, powders, dried fruit).
Remember- it is NOT essential to have all of these items to start eating a healthier lifestyle. Nor would it be wise on your wallet… Start out with just a few that are more relevant to your eating style and then branch out and try some more obscure items to expand your recipe repertoire and taste palate.
Most importantly, have fun experimenting with all the new, healthy ingredients in your kitchen!
