Plant-Based Protein Powders

Since starting this new diet, I’ve been on a great hunt for THE BEST plant-based protein powder.

It’s been pretty hard with limited resources and knowledge on the subject. I can only use what I can find and order online. And I don’t really know anybody personally that has had any experience with this stuff to ask.

I looked to Google. And YouTube.

RAW Protein Powder

I found a bunch of information on various types of powders, including comparisons.

Now, you should know, that like most protein powders, these guys are expensive! And some of them more so than others because they are organic.

With that said, I obviously couldn’t try them all… you know- budget restrictions and all. So I ordered what I found to be pretty popular and reputable to start sampling what my options were.

  1. Vega Protein Powder
  2. Garden of Life RAW Protein Powder
  3. Hemp Protein Powder
  4. Brown Rice Protein Powder
  5. Sunwarrior Warrior Blend RAW Vegan Protein Powder

I’m only 5 protein powders in, but I think I have a little bit of a clue to give you some suggestions if you’re at all curious. I know of a few people that use Plant Fusion Protein Powder and I don’t personally recommend it- the ingredients list contains fructose (which is another fancy name for sugar) as well as silica…

I have heard a lot of people vouch for the Chocolate Shakeology routine as well. It is extremely expensive for just a 30-day supply though- $130!!!!. That is the main reason that I have not tried it myself yet (and actually probably won’t…). But it does boast a great superfood profile.


As you can see from the photo, Vega offers a TON of nutritional benefits. And guess what? It tastes delicious! The texture is very smooth and I actually really enjoyed the flavor. I would always drink one scoop mixed with 1 cup of water directly after my work outs. It would keep me going for a long while until I got the chance to sit down and actually eat something. I have tried the vanilla and the chocolate flavors. Vanilla didn’t really taste like vanilla… but the taste it did have was really yummy, so I wasn’t about to complain. Plus! All that nutrition for just 135 calories a glass??? I will take it!

Oh, but the ingredients are not certified organic : ( Oh, and this is VERY expensive. You get 22 servings for about $55 a canister. Ouch.


If you are looking for optimal nutrition, than look no further. The ingredients in this protein powder are all organic, raw, AND sprouted. It sounds too good to be true almost. I ordered myself the vanilla and made up a glass using water, just like I did with Vega One. Yeaaaaaaa… I had to practically force myself to drink it. The texture is super grainy. You almost have to chew it. And the taste wasn’t very good. Not sweet really and I definitely didn’t taste any vanilla. I quickly learned that this wasn’t the type of protein powder that could simply be drank with water on its own. The next day I put it in the blender with a cup of almond and a frozen banana. MUCH better! It was much more enticing after that… Now I only drink this when I put it in a smoothie.

With this powder, you get 28 servings at 155 calories each per canister. And you can buy it for about $32 on (This is the protein powder in the smoothie photos shown.)


I really like hemp protein powder. Most of the time there is nothing additional added to the powder, not even a sweetener, which makes it simply an add-in for a smoothie. So I can’t really use it comparatively with the other powders since they are almost individual drink mixes. I bought Vitacost Organic Hemp Protein Mix. It is literally just raw certified organic hemp protein powder. No funny business. I usually dump just one scoop in with a smoothie when I want an extra kick of protein. The flavor is very subtle and there is never any textural graininess (not with just one scoop at least). 4 tablespoons of the stuff will give you 120 calories and 11 grams of protein. Not bad! And one container has about 15 servings at just $8.79. Not bad at all…


I tried this exact brand shown here. Oh my gosh was it gross. But to be fair, at the time it was my first plant-based protein powder experience. I was just mixing it with water. I didn’t even think to put it in my smoothie. So the only thing I can say is that it is disgusting with just water. One scoop has only 60 calories and 11 grams of protein though, which is VERY good. One container of this stuff gives you 30 servings at $11. Excellent. Too bad it’s terrible- yuck!



I’ve just recently started using this protein powder in place of Garden of Life RAW Protein PowderThe way that the Garden of Life powder was affecting the taste and texture of my smoothies was preventing me from using it regularly, so I thought I’d try Sunwarrior out for a change. And boy, am I glad that I did! I’m a convert for sure! The other stuff obviously offers much more nutrition since it is all sprouted and raw, but this powder isn’t anything to scoff at either…Although it doesn’t seem to be organic, it is RAW. The ingredients list reads like this: Proprietary Protein Blend (raw organic pea protein, raw cranberry protein, raw organic hemp seed protein), organic, organic vanilla extract, natural fibers (fenugreek, knojac), stevia, ancient sea salt, medium chain triglycerides, herbal (tea leaf) extract, natural citrus extract, organic cinnamon extract. So as you can see, nothing truly unnatural in this protein powder. That’s a must for me. AND! It isn’t gritty. Also, the flavor it imparts is very minimal and not offensive. It’s taste and texture are so enjoyable that I use a scoop of this everyday with my lunch smoothie. (So far I have only tried the Vanilla, but it also comes in Chocolate and Natural flavors).

Buuuuuuut…. it is a little bit more expensive than the Garden of Life though. With this Sunwarrior powder you get 40 servings with 100 calories and 19 grams of protein in each serving at the average price of $41 per 2.2 lb container.

RAW Protein Powder


  1. Garden of Life RAW Protein Powder- This stuff is a nutritional powerhouse!! You can’t pass this up simply because it is a little grainy. The stats are too good and the price is right.
  2. Sunwarrior Warrior Blend RAW Vegan Protein Powder- The only reason this isn’t my #1 pick is because it is a bit more expensive and a little less nutritious. But this is actually the one that I buy and use on a regular bases. I find it to be the best compromise between taste, nutrition, and price. LOVE this one!
  3. Hemp Protein Powder- Great for just adding a little umph to your smoothies without effecting the taste too much.
  4. Vega One- I LOVE the taste of this. And it is so smooooth… Too bad it’s not organic and it is CRAZY expensive!

    I love Garden of Life products! I purchased the Raw Fiber Beyond Organic Fiber and it is amazing!! My stomach was a little poochy until I mixed some of this in with my Earnest Eats Hot and Fit Cereal. One scoop REALLY expands!! I found that putting it in my blender mixes it much better than trying by hand. One scoop has 7 grams of protein,120 calories and 9 grams of fiber! Combine that with Earnest Eats and you add 180 calories, 5 more grams of fiber and 6 more grams of protein!! Keeps me going pretty much all day. I am a pet sitter and have a pretty demanding job. Am going to try ALL of Garden of Life products!!

    I like hemp powder from trader Joe’s and its inexpensive. I also add other superfoods to my smoothies camu camu,mangosteen powder, maca powder,red maca, goji berry powder, golden berries, flax seeds, chia seeds, psyillium husks, raw spouted nuts, sprouts, coco nibs, raw carob, barley grass, spirallina, lumuca, wheatgrass, acai powder, purple Maqui berry powder, local bee pollen and seaweed. &

    I personally prefer the ones you can’t really taste, and mix into drinks. Now I realize, that’s only because I haven’t found one I actually think tastes good. But, you’re right, paying $55 bucks seems pretty crazy to spend on a powder. But maybe it lasts a long time?

    Try 22 days !! My favorite bar now makes a protein shake!!! Same thing with the vanilla.. Doesn’t taste so much like vanilla but is really good. Much better than all the other vegan shakes I have tried

    I have been using Sun Warrior products for quite a while and love them all. They are a little on the high side but you can find them on sale if you do some web searching. High quality!!!

    Hey! Came across this on pinterest of course..!

    I use “pea protein” from my protein, its £10/kg .. 25g of protein per 30g and roughly 110 calories per 30g (if I remember right!) And the taste is very bareable! , but I guess US shipping makes the cost up a bit more D:

    They’ve also got a vegan blend combining pea, hemp and brown rice.. Its really gross and I’m used to gross shakes and supplements but this was something else.

    I just had this argument with a friend that it is better to get protein from plant based. I google the term and this article came up. Read it out loud and she had nothing else to say. Lol

    Thank you I am going to look into these options. I use Life Basics Plant Protein Mix. I prefer the Unsweetened Vanilla so that I can add whatever sweetener that I want. I think it’s a very clean/healthy vegan protein powder.

    Have you tried PurePharma’s PR3? It has the added bonus of containing collagen and coconut water so you replenish your electrolytes. It’s also made with real Dutch coca and tastes so good with almond milk.
