3 Day Smoothie Detox

Recently I went on a weeks vacation to England. And to be completely honest, I did partake in some less than healthy food… Sometimes it’s hard when you are on vacation to find truly healthy options. Before I left for my trip, I looked up vegetarian restaurants on TripAdvisor (something you can easily do using their filter buttons on the left hand side), so dinner went well on all accounts. It was from breakfast up until then that was the most difficult. I was able to run into a Whole Foods store for lunch one day and a Pret a Manger another day. But I was there a whole week and wasn’t always able to find healthy options. Plus, I didn’t want to leave England without experiencing their afternoon tea- which included scones, jam, pastries… SO there was some sugar, butter, eggs, and cheese on my trip. BUT! I ate NO meat while there. I definitely could have been on worse behavior. Now that I am back home I want to get back to 100% natural, healthy eating so I can keep feeling my best.

So I thought a detox was in order.

Kick all that sludge out of my system and completely REBOOT my body!!

3 Day Smoothie Detox

This is the second detox I’ve ever done and by far the most effective. The first day of my detox I suffered some serious detox side-effects though. I was utterly exhausted all day long. But by the next day I felt much better. And by the last day I felt FANTASTIC. Unless your body is completely clean (which, let’s face it, very few peoples are), you will most likely experience some symptoms too if you choose to detox.

Detox symptoms are not from a lack of nutrition or protein, but rather caused by the poison inside your body that the powerfully cleansing foods have shaken loose. Toxins are being newly integrated into your system at a very fast rate and so your body will suffer from the ill effects of this as it begins to remove them completely from your system. That acidic, toxic residue  that is being rushed to the surface, keeps us from efficiently absorbing nutrition into our bodies. By subjecting your body to a cleanse you are creating a more efficient, nutrient absorbing state for your body. Over time it will begin to re-collect more toxins though, that is why it is important to partake in cleanses on a more regular basis than once a year following your New Year’s resolution. Personally, I am aiming to complete 4 per year. A goal I find realistic for myself.

Some typical, temporary cleansing symptoms include: Headaches, sore throat, skin rashes or eruptions, aches and pains, soreness, moodiness, dizziness, feeling lightheaded, and exhaustion, the most common of them all.

3-Day-Smoothie-Cleanse

My Smoothie Detox Rules-

  • For optimal results, start your detox with a single salt flush, the morning of the first day ONLY. (OPTIONAL)
  • If participating in salt flush, include a daily dose of probiotics during the detox to replace any good bacteria loss during the process.
  • Each day of the detox, choose 3 to 4 of the listed smoothies to consume as your meals. If you find yourself hungry or are burning excess calories exercising, you should be drinking 4 a day. Each contains an adequate amount of calories for one day.
  • Ingredients can easily be swapped depending on personal preference and availability (pears switched for apples, raspberries switched for strawberries, kale switched for spinach, hemp/flax/chia are all interchangeable).
  • You can hydrate yourself additionally throughout the day with plain water, lemon water, or raw apple cider vinegar water (1 tablespoon/2 cups).
  • If any of these are not sweet enough for you, add some all- natural stevia to taste.
  • DO NOT EAT ANYTHING in addition to the smoothies (unless it’s all-natural and healthful like veggie sticks).

Why Salt Flush?

A salt flush is a process that empties the waste and toxins in your colon out of your body through a very natural mean- high quality, natural sea SALT. And unlike other methods of colon cleansing, it helps to rid your whole GI tract of toxins as it travels down your system, healing and nourishing each inch. So with the salt flush you remove waste throughout the body rather than just the colon. It is because of this that a salt flush is also effective in helping with other digestive problems such as gas, bloating, IBS, cramping AND non-digestive problems such as skin eruptions, allergies, respiratory issues, and general health problems.

It is vital to keep your colon healthy and clean since it houses all the waste of your body. Over time your colon becomes overloaded with poisonous waste, which causes toxic stress on the rest of your body. That is why people with terrible diets often have poor skin complexions. The skin is the largest organ in the body and the first to show any signs of toxicity. Participating in a colon cleanse will start a chain reaction of cleansing the other organs throughout the whole body.

Cleansing your colon is something you should try and take part in on a regular basis, to keep your body functioning at its’ best. I aim for once a month, but how often you do it is completely based on your personal need/desire. It is completely safe to do it as often as 2 times a week.

Sea_Salt

How It Works

You start the morning of your salt flush by drinking a highly concentrated solution of salt-water; 30 minutes later you consume a quart of plain water; 2 hours pass without food or drink to ensure the flush to take affect. Within that 2 hour time period the salt makes its way through your GI tract, pushing along waste and healing as it goes. It creates a wave of waste that is eliminated from your body in a quick and effective manner. How quickly it takes the process to complete is entirely dependent on the individual, their diet, and how many times they have colon cleansed in the past. It may take only 30 minutes before the flush begins execution or it could take up to 2 hours. Usually once the evacuation begins, it only lasts between 30-60 minutes (in sporadic sessions).

I suggest salt flush simply because of its convenience, but other methods of colon cleansing will work equally well to help detox your body (enema or gravity-centered colonics). *For some individuals, a salt flush is not a safe choice. Please make sure you have no severe medical problems that may be complicated by the process before participating. If questionable, please call your Doctor for advice first.

What Type of Salt to Use

Any salt that is 100% untreated and all-natural can be used in the salt flush. DO NOT USE TABLE SALT. I personally use celtic sea salt, but even better options are Premier Pink Salt and Sun Fire Salt. The higher quality salt you use, the more benefits your body will reap during the flush.

Salt Flush Routine

  1. Do NOT eat or drink anything until completing the salt flush.
  2. Upon waking, drink 4 cups (32 ounces) warm water mixed with 1 tablespoon 100% natural, untreated sea salt. Try to consume all the salt water within 10 minutes of beginning to drink the solution.
  3. 30 minutes later drink 4 cups (32 ounces) untreated water. Just PLAIN water. Try to consume all the water within 10 minutes of beginning to drink it.
  4. Do NOT eat or drink anything for 2 hours following step 3.

Smoothie #1 is my own creation, based off of My Morning SmoothieSmoothie #2 comes directly from Oh She Glows. Smoothie #4 I got from Dr. Oz’s 3-day Smoothie Cleanse and smoothie #3 I adapted from his Vitamin Cocktail. My favorites were #1 and #3.

3 Day Smoothie Cleanse

Smoothie #1

1/2 cup chopped cucumber

1 cup strawberries (preferably frozen)

1 apple, cored and roughly chopped

2 cups packed spinach or 1 cup kale

1 tablespoon hemp seeds

1 tablespoon almond butter

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

3/4 cup water

1/2 cup ice

Cucumbers (skin radiance and hydration), Apples (lowers cholesterol, normalize blood sugar, fiber, detoxifies, anti-cancer), Strawberries (antioxidants, vitamin C, anti-aging), Spinach (youthful skin, healthy blood, calcium),  Hemp Seeds (perfect dose of omega 3 and 6′s, protein, support immune system, anti-inflammatory, helps maintain weight), Almonds (soft skin, protein, calcium, anti-inflammatory), Lemons (blemish-free skin, digestion aid, alkaline, cleanses body)

This smoothie is a killer combination of nutrient dense foods, creating a seriously powerful detox smoothie.

Avocados (soft and youthful skin, amino acids, healthy monounsaturated fats), Celery (anti-inflammatory, prevents dark under-eye circles, reduce stress), Strawberries (antioxidants, vitamin C), Beets (oxygenates blood, alkaline, stimulates liver function, antioxidants), Lemons (blemish-free skin, digestion aid, alkaline, cleanses body), Coconut Oil (normalize blood sugar, reduce adrenal work, increases energy, digestion aid), Apples (lowers cholesterol, normalize blood sugar, fiber, detoxifies, anti-cancer)

3 Day Smoothie Cleanse

1/2 cup chopped mango

1 cup blueberries

1 cup coconut water

2 cups packed spinach or 1 cup kale

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1/4 avocado

1/8 tsp cayenne pepper

1 tablespoon flax seeds

1/2 cup ice

    Good morning. I’ve been following you for a while now and applaud your change in diet for you and your family. Although when I read today’s blog I am kinda disappointed. It doesn’t really feel like you have made a lifestyle change. Seems as if you are sending your children mixed messages of healthy eating! Even when my husband and I go on vacation we don’t indulge in junk and continue eating healthy. It can be done. Just doesn’t really seem like a healthy lifestyle to me, only when it is convenient.

    I am only going to be in England once… I am going to enjoy myself and not stress over not being able to find anything to eat, when I am starving in an unfamiliar city, lugging two children around without my Husband there for help- yes, I am going to eat a little cheese if I can’t find anything else. I ate 90% vegan and 100% vegetarian while I was there, researching vegan/vegetarian restaurants before I left even. I think I can have a little wiggle room.

    I think she is doing a great job and I do applaud her! I don’t know how closely you follow her blog (this one and her old one Laura’s Sweet Spot) but she has changed immensely! Not sure if you realize how hard it is being a military wife who travels around with two babies by herself. At least she isn’t lying to all of her followers and saying she is living this perfect vegan life. She admits that she struggles and that she gives in occasionally. I think that’s great for her to be able to admit that. She hasn’t been doing this long, of course she is going to slip up. Also, not sure if you recall where she lives, therefore, she struggles with not even having many vegan choices available. I know that she has taken action on the post she lives to get more vegan food options. And I don’t recall hearing her say she’s been eating complete junk, she still was choosing healthy food options they just weren’t vegan. At least she is honest to her followers, that is one thing I always wonder about when following different blogs. You can write whatever you want! Good job Laura keep it up!

    The subject of ‘detox’ is well covered, thorough read. Really shows how preparing yourself for detox is important. It is really important that people get advice and read into the process before undertaking a detox. Trying to keep a health lifestyle is tough especially when you have to travel. Temptation lives round ever corner!

    For these smoothies, I used a blender. I only recently got a juicer, but I am now including one juice a day in my diet in addition to my regular smoothies.

    I think a smoothie detox no longer than three days, consisting of 4 smoothies will be perfectly safe. You will get plenty of calories in for you and the baby.

    Hello! I decided to start your smoothie detox and just wanted to point out that for the salt flush, you say to mix 1 TBSP salt with 4 cups of water. And then you have in parentheses 24 ounces. 4 cups of water is 32 ounces. I am not sure if this matters, but it does alter the salt concentration, so you may want to clarify. 24 ounces would be 3 cups of water. Which is correct?

    I started this today. I am sick of feeling like crap everyday. I don’t have weight to lose, but I feel like I have weights attached to my feet. I’m also tired, bitchy, have bad skin, and I always look bloated in the face. Man oh man this is difficult so far! I’m having to hang out in my room with the door closed to keep from eating cookies, Ice cream, or have a big cup of coffee. Crazy how massive my cravings are!!

    What you are doing is AWESOME! It is exactly what your body needs! I had the same terrible feelings all the time, exactly as you described- I felt so heavy like I had “weights attached to my feet”. What a perfect analogy. Changing my diet has been a lifesaver for me. I feel much lighter and easier to find the energy to move and do things. I’m less cranky. And feel 500% better about my body.     Just to add another testimonial – I found it encouraging to hear others stories so I knew what to expect.
    The girl who lives upstairs and I decided to do both the salt flush and 3 day smoothie detox, much to the enjoyment of our husbands as we read aloud the different website “reviews” of what a salt flush does. They particularly giggled at one woman saying she couldn’t trust her farts anymore…
    We started early in the morning with the flush and the first sip, Nicole (my friend) exclaimed “It’s not that bad!” Halfway through the salt concoction, we laughed at her first impression. The second half of the salt water was very difficult to finish. Half an hour later, in the midst of wondering what would happen, I stopped mid conversation saying “I have to go…” So it began. I was surprised how I did not feel “ill”, as one does when they’ve eaten something bad. In the contrary, I felt totally fine, I just needed to go to the bathroom *right now* several times for the next half hour. After that, I felt tired, but as though the whole system did it’s job. Without being graphic, I noticed how much it really did clean things I could understand would not be taken care of otherwise.
    A bit of back story as well – Nicole is already on an extremely plant based diet, unlike myself. Living in Costa Rica, we eat a lot of rice and beans, and things cooked in a lot of oil. Nicole was having a lot of stomach issues, and resolved them by changing her diet. I read the review of having more energy and was hoping for this result, and wouldn’t complain about weight loss if it happened :)
    The first two days I was happy to be drinking smoothies – something I usually enjoy anyways. The 3rd day I was tired of sweet things, and both Nicole and I began experiencing painful bloating in the afternoon, causing us to cut it short. Before that bloating, I had no detox side effects. I missed chewing a lot, but that is to be expected. The first night I “cheated” by roasting chickpeas as a snack as well, as I was quite hungry in the evenings.
    It wasn’t until the day after the detox that I experienced my first detox symptoms, which I was almost happy to experience. I was nice to know that my body was doing it’s job, and it made me realize the importance of what I put in my body too.
    In the end, it was a positive experience, as I saw myself accomplish something new. Although I stopped one smoothie short, I know I can go further next time. I was disappointed by not feeling more energy results in the end, but otherwise it was a pretty good experience.

    And being distracted, I forgot to add the one part that Nicole mentioned. She was saying that she had not experienced bloating like that since she had started her new plant based diet, and balanced her gut. We chalked it up to her wiping out not only the bad, but the good bacteria in her gut, and started getting serious about probiotics. Just as a warning, to make sure that if you’re already having issues, you have to be really careful about building your gut health back up.

    Laura, about a year ago I started incorporating smoothies in my diet simply for convenience. Now, I am trying sooo hard to reboot my eating habits. Thank you for your website.     I’m very sorry but this did not work out for us. The salt water flush made my husband puke his guts out, making me too afraid to try, and #1 & #4 smoothies tasted awful. We are too scared to try #2 & #3! We’ll try the detox thing again when we find something a little more palatable.

    Sorry to hear about things not going well for you. Obviously the salt flush isn’t for everybody. Some people have problems with it while others never do. I myself do it at least once a mont and have never had a problem. And smoothies always vary depending on the blender used, the sweetness of the fruit, use of stevia, etc. Don’t worry, you will find a detox that works for you eventually!

    Hello, I’m super intrigued by this cleanse but I’m worried that there isn’t enough protein in the smoothies. Can you speak to that? Also, is there a probiotic supplement you would recommend?

    If you are concerned about protein, I would suggest using a natural whole foods protein source rather than a powder since this is supposed to be a “cleanse”. I would use hemp seeds or almond butter. Don’t forget that greens also have a lot of protein. And I use Vitacost Probiotics.

    Would it be okay if I didn’t include celery in the smoothie? I can not stand the taste..and instead of almond butter just peanut butter and instead of almond milk use oat or soy milk? I’m allergic to almonds :(

    Of course! You can use zucchini in place of celery if you want. The flavor is almost undetectable with zucchini.

    Hello,

    I am looking at “going green”. Everything that I have read so far about this suggests doing a detox. Your site has been the most informative so far. My husband and I want to do this as a family. We have a 22 month old son and I am nursing a 5 month old daughter. Is this safe for our son and for me to do with nursing? Also our son has allergies to strawberries/raspberries/blackberries and nuts what can we use to replace those?

    It’s definitely safe. For you, since you are nursing, I would suggest maybe adding an extra tablespoon of hemp seeds/source of fat to your smoothies. And as far as replacing berries- you can use frozen chunks of mango or pineapple maybe? I can’t vouch for the flavor in these recipes but it should still help you achieve the same goal of adding natural sweetness and some frostiness to the smoothie. And as far as nuts- maybe try some seeds like sunflower seed butter or hemp seeds, or pumpkin seed butter. Otherwise just use some avocado or coconut oil for healthy fat. Good luck!

    I just found your blog through a post on pinterest. WOW! I think you’re amazing! I just started the detox this morning. I just have a couple questions. Is it ok for me to eat organic raw almonds? Also, many people have commented that they don’t feel hungry at all. If I do, does that mean something is wrong?

    Thanks Naomi! Yes almonds are great for you- to unlock all of their benefits, soak them in a bowl of water overnight and rinse them in the morning. This helps get rid of all the enzyme inhibitors which don’t allow you to absorb all of their nutrients. And if you feel hungry it doesn’t mean that you did something wrong, it just means that the hungry receptors in your stomach aren’t used to the new way of eating yet. Sometimes it takes time for our bodies to get on board. And as far as starting a cleanse while in recovery… I can’t say as though I’d recommend it. Only because if your body goes through detox then it has to tear up all the toxins in your system before it can flush them out, so that generally means you go through a ‘detox’ period in which you feel worse before you feel better.     2 questions, can I do the salt flush the night before and start the detox in the morning? Also, can I prep all the smoothies the day before and store them in the fridge so I can bring them with me to work?

    The salt flush 100% needs to be done in the morning on an empty stomach. But the smoothies can be prepared in advance- they will however have a different taste and texture to them. Definitely will need to be stirred well before drinking since they will separate as they sit.

    hello! I am thinking to try this 3 day detox… Do u think it is ok to add protein to smoothies? I exercise every day, dont want to be too weak.

    Yes, it is fine. I would stick to plant-based protein though. Animal proteins are not detox friendly.

    Can I salt cleanse the morning that I start the detox like salt cleans and then have that be my day 1 of juicing

    Yes, you should salt cleanse the very first day you begin drinking your detox beverages. That way your system is clean and clear and ready to absorb as many nutrients as possible!

    Hello! I came across this detox on pinterest. I did the salt portion this morning. I am currently on my 2 hour part of not eatting or drinking. After this 2 hours its nothing but smoothies for the next 3 days rights? Can I eat fruit or no? Also, I won’t be able to make a smoothie at work can I go to tropical smoothie or no?

    You can eat fruit, sure. Or raw veggies. You can modify this plan to fit your own personal schedule as needed. This is more of like a guideline to give you an idea what you could do for a smoothie detox plan.

    It’s 5pm on the first day of my detox and I am dying for some Cheerios! My son is sitting next to me with a cup of those crunchy, beautiful, toasty oats and I’m dying here! You mentioned we could have healthy snacks. Does that include any nuts or say a spoon of nut butter? My cravings just hit and all time high and I need some coping mechanism!

    Nuts and nut butters are fine during a detox, as long as they are raw and not salted or roasted.

    You can. However the taste and texture will change slightly. Be sure to stir or shake well because they do separate.

    Hi I just finished day 2 of the 3 day detox cleansing. I didn’t do salt flush on day 1, but just straight to smoothies. I haven’t had bowl movement for past 2 days. Is it normal? I thought detox is supposed to flush out body waste. Thanks!

    I have a latex fruit allergy so I have to avoid melons (including cucumbers), bananas, avocados. Those three ingredients are listed in your smoothies. Any ideas on what to use instead of those ingredients?

    Happy to report, I just finished this detox! Though the last 2 days I only drank 3/4 smoothies. I also added Shakeology to one of them each day. The 3rd day I just couldn’t bring myself to face the beets and thickness again. But am happy with my results! I have a new appreciation for the foods I CAN eat (haha) and in those 3 days I lost a little over 4#!! Yay!

    i will be starting the 21 day fix as a New Years resolution. Prior to starting that new program I will be doing the 3 day smoothie detox with the salt flush as an attempt to start a new lifestyle on a blank canvas.i am 29 year old mother of 3. I weigh in at about 220 lbs. goal weight is 140! I am very excited about this adventure and I am glad I came across your profile. Wish me luck!

    I do not like coconut water at all. Can I substitute somethings else for it that would be equally beneficial? If not what is the best tasting coconut water you have tasted? Thank you. Sheila

    salt flush is bad idea: it did not work for me . Instead all salt got absorbed and I gained 1.2 kg for 1 day! because that salt kept all the water . Do not do that flush!

    The smoothies look fine but that salt flush is flat-out irresponsible. Your advice here could seriously sicken anyone with kidney or heart disease, or high blood pressure. Or even possibly kill them, as you have told people to take 33% more salt than there is in there than a typical flush. You are honestly advising people take over 3 days worth of the safe salt limit for a healthy heart in only 10 minutes, never mind anyone with heart disease?? The human body under no stress, non tropical condition needs only 500 mg of sodium each day. This flush uses 2400 x 3 = 7,200 mg. Dr. Weil has said a typical flush would use 1-2 teaspoons. a tablespoon is 3 teaspoons. 2,400 x 3 mg in http://www.drweil.com/health-wellness/body-mind-spirit/gastrointestinal/sea-salt-flush-whats-the-best-cleansing-regime/ Your body needs salt to hang onto fluid in the body. In the tissues it hangs onto water. But if it’s all dumped into the colon it will suck water OUT of your body. You’re deliberately giving people diarrhoea via dehydrating the tissues – this amount of salt sucks a huge amount of water out of your body, gives you diarrhoea, and blows your good gut flora out with it and making like that s healthy? What the hell? Did you study life sciences at all??? Sure, you say add an extra 4 cups of liquid but you are saying to do this all at once! What a stupid idea -so hard on the kidneys whose job it is, along with the liver to detox the body. Also as far as electrolytes in the body go sodium is the one we need the least of. You’ve added more sodium into someone’s body than we need of the elecrolyte we need the most of, potassium (5,000 mg each day)… and all in 10 minutes. Why not just advise a juice fast and some senna? :-(
