Blueberry Hemp Smoothie

Alright, folks- this is it.

I’ve officially purchased our plane tickets back to the States! Here we go America. We’re coming home!!

Okay, so we don’t actually leave for another month… but still! For the last few months my life has been one big question mark (as it is most of the time being a military family). Just sheer chaos. And although I still have lots of questions as to what is going to happen with us, I at least know that I will be going back to New York to live with my parents during Dave’s upcoming deployment. All of my stuff will remain in our rented home in Germany, but the kids and I will most likely not return. I am expecting Dave to PCS (move) to a new duty station in the States as soon as he returns from Afghanistan. Until then I am just going to wait out the next year of my life back at the ol’ homestead with the folks. Try and make some memories.

It’s a much better alternative than being alone in Germany another year. I just wouldn’t be able to take it. Especially considering that Dave has also been gone training the last two months on top of that. That much isolation with two small children (despite how much I love them…) can drive a person mad.

SO! In another month I will be stateside- YAY!!!Pretty nervous about the transition period with my diet though… there is going to be that (hopefully) short time period where I have unhealthy food options while traveling and upon my arrival. But naturally my goal is to stay healthy and make smart choices during that time (it will certainly be helpful in recovering from the 24-hour trip if I do so!)

But you know what? My parents DO have a blender. So I can rest assured that I will easily be able to rely on healthy, superfood smoothies to take care of my body until I can get adjusted to my new life.

There is nothing off-putting about this smoothie. No sneaky vegetables. The bulk of it is made with deliciously sweet fruit- a banana and a handful of blueberries. A gorgeous combination! Although you could, of course, substitute out the blueberries for another berry of your choosing.

And with the use of almond milk and the addition of 2 beautiful tablespoons of hemp seeds (I LOVE hemp seeds), this smoothie has a nice creamy quality to it, as well as a boost of Omega-3′s & 6′s

Smart Substitutions:

  • Bananas can be substituted with 1/2 cup frozen mango or 4 dates (add extra ice if using dates).
  • Any berry will work in this smoothie!
  • Don’t have hemp seeds? Try 1 tablespoon almond butter or tahini.

Blueberry Hemp Smoothie
Serves: 1
  • ¾ cup non-dairy milk (or coconut water)
  • 1 banana (preferably frozen)
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • 2 tablespoons hemp seeds
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ice and additional sweetener, as needed
  1. Place all ingredients together in blender and blend until completely smooth. (If smoothie is too thick- due to the frozen fruit- just add a couple small splashes of almond milk until you reach the desired consistency).
If your fruit is not frozen, I suggest adding a handful of ice to thicken and chill the smoothie.

    My, reading your post and how yur lifestyle is, I salut you and your husband. It takes a lot of strength to be a military wife. I am glad you are coming home in the US soon and be with your parents to help you out with the kiddos. Have a safe trip, and keep on posting nice munches.

    Good Luck!! As a military spouse, I understand completely. We are moving back stateside in 6 weeks. I to want to stay on the healthy eating, but know that I will want foods that I have not had in 4 years. So I will have my cheat days and then back to healthy living. Plus, traveling, finding a home, and then unpacking.. I hope you still blog when you move back. I will pray for your husband during his deployment for safety and for the separation to go smoothly.     Love hemp seed in smoothies. Excellent recipe! Thanks for sharing. I also live in US and have a true appreciation for foods that sustain. Very thankful for all God has provided.
