My Morning Smoothie!

I drink this every. single. morning.

It is officially a habit I refuse to break. More addicting than coffee.

Okay, now I’m just sounding crazy… but I swear I’m not.

Green smoothies are where it’s at, I’m tellin’ ya. I fully believe that my new morning ritual is 99% responsible for the success of my diet.

I’m talking about my increased energy, the clearer skin, an improved mood, and a metabolism that just won’t quit.

Did I mention that I had a baby 7 months ago and this smoothie has helped me get in better shape than BEFORE I got pregnant?

That is why I find my green smoothies more addictive than coffee- because the results are so phenomenal that you don’t want to give them up.

This is now my morning ritual: 2 cups water with the juice of 1/2 lemon ASAP. Settle the kids. Smoothie time!

And the success I have had doing this is beyond what I could have imagined. Why would I ever go back to coffee when I feel and look so great from my green smoothie?

The coolest thing about green smoothies is that you can pretty much pick whatever combination of fruit and greens that works for you and it will always be nutritious and effective.

It took me a long time though to find a combination that made me happy enough to sip on everyday. Mostly because I was hell bent on having 2 servings of greens stuffed in there. Not just spinach.

I started experimenting with celery. I was aiming to create a combination similar to the Glowing Green Smoothie, but one that I could actually stomach.

Turns out I don’t like celery in smoothies.

Once I traded that in for some cucumber, everything changed. My green smoothie found its bliss : )

The winning combination? You’re looking at it!

Cucumber. Apple. Strawberries. Banana. Spinach. Lemon.

And you know what else? You don’t even need the banana. So if you are really looking to lose weight, just cut that out. I put it in because I enjoy the taste, and it makes the texture less apple-saucy. But you definitely don’t need it. I often make it with just berries and an apple for fruit. My daughter actually prefers it that way. Oh yeah, did I not mention that yet?

My daughter LOVES this green smoothie! More so than the chocolate ones I make her. That is saying something since she is head over heels for anything chocolate.

You know who else likes this? Dave! He used to look like he was going to be sick when I would put vegetables in my smoothies. Now he looks forward to making himself one every morning too.

I should warn you. Your smoothie won’t be this green. That is mostly photoshop just to make the picture pop. Plus, the red in the strawberries can give the green a browner quality sometimes.

*UPDATE- I have a NEW morning smoothie! More hardcore than this one and even more effective. I’d call this one a good beginners Green Smoothie.*

FOR PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING MOMS: You will want to add some protein and/or fat. Now is not the time to starve yourself. Add one or more tablespoon of the following- almond butter, coconut butter, hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds, plant-based protein powder.

By the way, this smoothie is high in vitamin A, vitamin C, fiber, iron, manganese, magnesium, and potassium.

Smart Substitutions: If you want to go real low-cal, low-sugar with this smoothie, you can easily forget the banana. I’ve been doing that lately and then just adding some stevia in its place. That way if the lunch smoothie I am making later in the day has a banana in it, I don’t double up on my banana consumption for the day ; )

Green Smoothie
Serves: 1
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup chopped cucumber
  • 1 cup strawberries (preferably frozen)
  • 1 banana, optional (preferably frozen)
  • 1 apple, cored
  • 2 tightly packed cups spinach
  • juice of ½ lemon
  • ice, if not using frozen fruit and you want your smoothie chilled
  1. Pack everything into your blender and let it run until it is smooth!
For a smoothie lower in calories and sugar, omit one of the fruit servings and add some stevia/xylitol, if needed.
Add 1 tablespoon of chia seeds or milled flax seeds for a serving of healthy fats!

*Now that I am used to this smoothie, I’ve  started adding 3 ounces of baby spinach, making it without the banana, and sweetening it with stevia. More nutrition and less sugar!*

    I too have a smoothie every morn, for 7 yrs. now. I’m waiting for someone to “invent” a Hot smoothie for winter when a cold smoothie makes me even colder.

    You could try adding some raw ginger or ginger juice! That’d be sure to warm you up during colder days. And it really does taste good. I always put a bit in my green juices but I’m sure it would work just as well in a smoothie

    i think this would be very good also. i love the green smoothies the best. i make my favorite with celery, spinach, broccoli. celery juice i learned keeps you from wanting anything sweet.and is good for alot of other things. i make the fruit ones for my grandson and my father.

    Ok, I will admit, I was a little sad that you were setting your baking site to the side for a more whole food diet. But the more I read your recipes, I’m getting a little excited to take some small steps. And now that my husband’s been transferred back to our local AFB, he can try to eat better with me. I think I’ll start with these morning smoothies. The sound great!

    I make them fresh every morning. But you can definitely freeze it! Just make sure you give it a good stir or shake to get it all mixed together well again. The fiber and water will separate naturally during the freezing process.

    Is this all you eat for breakfast, or do you drink this in addition to eating something for breakfast? I am a teacher and am looking forward to trying this out, but I dont know if it would be enough to keep me full! Thanks!

    Well, I start my day with the 2 cups of water and lemon which fills my stomach pretty full. And about an hour later I have the smoothie, then 2 hours later I start getting a bit hungry. But at that point I usually go for a run and wait until I shower afterwards to eat. It ends up being just about noon then when I eat again. But! When I know that I won’t be running and might get hungry before I have the chance to get lunch, I usually eat some of this cereal and it keeps me full till lunch. It may not be enough to fill you up at first, and so you might get hungry, but your stomach/body will adjust accordingly if you keep at it : )

    All I did was add some vibrancy to the green to make it pop, not really to cover anything up. But, the color does change every day I make it depending on how many strawberries I add, whether I use the banana, how much spinach I use, etc. Some days it is vibrant green and other days it is more brown.

    Absolutely! It’s just fruit, veggies, and water- it’ll only help make you healthier! You should drink only this in the morning though, since it is certainly not enough calories to support nursing.

    I would have something more. You can still keep it light and healthy with oatmeal or a slice of toast with nut butter. But this smoothie only has 250 calories WITH the banana. I just don’t feel comfortable with the idea that that’s enough calories to support milk production.

    How much does this make? I usually use my Magic Bullet to mix smoothies but I don’t think everything listed will fit. My blender is pretty old not sure if it can do the job.

    I was wondering about substituting yogurt for the banana? I’m guessing the banana gives it the smoothie texture but I would like to make it without the banana but still have the thickness. Any suggestions?

    You can certainly do that if you would like. Or you can try just using less water and maybe some ice to thicken it and then some stevia for extra sweetness if you need to.

    I use an avocado instead of banana, to give it that lovely creamy texture. You can’t taste it at all, but the texture is much nicer.

    Thanks for sharing this, I am starting a 5 and 2 diet and am hoping to use this as my breakfast on my fast days. Do you peel the cucumber before you use it? Also, if I use frozen spinach, how many nuggets do you think would be approx 2 cups?

    I always use the peel. Lots of nutrients are stored there. I would say that 1 cups worth of spinach would be plenty.

    I want to try this recipe but noticed that the carb count is 63. I started Weight Watchers, so tracking is key. It looks like this would be a 7 pt. smoothie. Is the carb count correct and could you provide the fiber count, please? Thank you!

    Well, that’s because there is a bunch of fruit to make it more palatable for those not used to green smoothies. To lower the carb count, take out the banana and leave it as is or use some stevia to make it more sweeter to taste. And I just used a basic calorie counter on the internet to get the values from, so I can’t guarantee how accurate it is.

    Thank you for this! I made this for the first time yesterday morning and I am enjoying another one as I type this out! I was skeptical, but it is very good. I did add a packet of splenda, but I really enjoy this smoothie, I think this may become my morning ritual as well :)

    Ok, I’ve been having a smoothie every morning this week. I have found that if I blend the water, cucumber, banana, and spinach first, I get a much smoother texture. I also switch it up and use blueberries or raspberries. I feel good drinking this, my body feels better. I’m hooked! The only downside is that after the water and the smoothie I’m running to the bathroom all day at work, but I probably have the cleanest kidneys and bladder! Lol

    It’s less than 300 calories… any less and you DEFINITELY would not be getting enough calories to take you through morning.

    Both versions are pretty high in sugar content. 27 and 41 grams of sugar per serving is a LOT. They do sound yummy though.

    Well, you can lower the sugar with less fruit, it just won’t be as sweet.

    Thanks for inventing a smoothie without yucky celery! I like this recipe and I’ve also added 1tbs. of chia seeds and 1tsp. of maca powder. I have trouble drinking all of the smoothie, though. I always have to save some for later.

    I added only a 1/4 cup of chopped celery, 1 T. of hemp seeds and 1 T of goji berries, 1 date for sweetness because I skipped the banana also kale over spinach. Very tasty!

    Question?? I drink a protein shake every morning after my workout. Could I add my protein powder to the smoothie in place of the banana for the sweetness? I use Visalus soy protein powder.

    I got it from the military PX. I am sure you can get them at Walmart or Bed, Bath, and Beyond maybe. The brand is COPCO. I like using it because I don’t like when my hands get chilly from touching the cold cup.

    I LOVE this smoothie! I have never cared for spinach but I’ve heard a lot of people talking about the benefits of spinach smoothies… When I found this one I was excited to try it! I’m not much of a breakfast eater but I have found this to be light and refreshing. I have been adding carrots and use granny smith apples (I developed an allergy to apples and these are the only ones I can eat)and it tastes great. It really has improved my overall well-being and I just wanted to share my success with you! :)

    GREAT recipe! I’ve been looking for a way to add a lot more veggies into my diet since I’ve kicked my juicer to the curb (pain in the butt to clean up). I have been drinking this every morning for the past month and feel fantastic! I pre-cut the apples and cucumbers and add lemon to prevent the apples from browning and package them in seperate baggies… that way I don’t have to do any chopping through the week. I’m currently trying to tweak the recipe so my hubby can drink it… he HATES veggies so I have to be really sneaky. Thank you for the recipe!!

    Hi, do the veggies lose nutrients is you pre cut them for the week. I did it this week and noticed the celery and cucumber dried out a bit and I want to be sure I’m getting the nutrients?

    Dear Julie,

    Although it is convenient to pre-cut fruits and veggies, all the nutrients evaporate within 2 hours of cutting. So essentially, one is just left with dead fruit and veg.
    I’m just trying to help. Please don’tmismisunderstand.
    The smoothie does look really good and I am definitely trying it first thing in the morning!!!

    I drink this in the morning, an hour or two later I go for a run, and then I have a protein drink. That keeps me well until 1pm or so. I usually have a smoothie for lunch too, but one that is more hefty than my morning one (including fats and proteins).

    In reference to your WHOLE morning ritual, not just the smoothie (because I’d like to try being a copycat and hope for your dietary success you mentioned in the beginning)…the 2 cups of water with the juice of half a lemon…is that something you drink hot, like a tea? And we’re talking totally separate from the smoothie, right? If I was going to just use lemon juice, like in a bottle, about how much would that be?

    Excited to copycat your routine and see where it gets me! I have started having weight and skin problems due to a hormonal condition that I’m fighting a serious uphill battle with, even with medication. So I’m always eager to try anything new that I can get my hands on that might help!

    I’m sorry to hear about your troubles Sarah. Hopefully my diet can be of some assistance. When I wake up I drink 2 cups of warm water with about 2 tablespoons of lemon. I sweeten it with stevia because it is just too tart for me to handle. And then about an hour or so later when I’m finished with the kids, I make the green smoothie here. Since I don’t get around to drinking it until 9 or so in the morning, it usually takes me until lunch. Then at lunch I have another smoothie and a healthy snack later on before dinner. I just try and keep my mornings as clean as possible to keep things running smoothly so I don’t get bogged down and lose energy. My whole strategy was inspired by what I read in The Beauty Detox Solution by Kimberly Snyder. Although I don’t agree with everything she writes about, I like a lot of her points. SO I ended up just taking some cues from the things she writes about. If you have any more questions I’d be more than happy to help you any way that I can! Good luck!

    Thanks so much for detailing it out for me. I made the smoothie in advance tonight and put it in the fridge for the morning…I had a little leftover though, after I filled my bottle, so I decided to sip on some while watching my shows. It took a minute to get used to the slightly “vegetable-y” flavor, but before I knew it, it was gone and I was wishing I had more to drink! As someone who HATES spinach, this is truly success! Very excited! I work as a full-time nanny outside the home so I won’t be here to make myself a second one for lunch, but I’m going to start with the first and see how that goes. I may start putting my ingredients in a ziploc bag and freezing it the night before. Then I can bring that with me to work and throw it in their fridge when I get there and use their blender to make it up for lunch. We shall see! Either way I’m SO excited to start adding this to my routine, and I’ll let you know how it goes down the line! THANK YOU!!!

    Really happy to hear that Sarah! I actually should have specified that my lunch smoothie is a different smoothie than my morning smoothie (sorry). That way I get some variation in. I usually go with a more substantial smoothie for lunch, something with some added healthy fats and protein. You can check out my smoothie page to get some ideas. You can, of course, make this green one too for lunch if you’d like. It’s just a matter of preference.

    @Sarah – Be VERY careful about drinking lemon water. I am a dentist and have seen countless patients come in after jumping on the “lemon water” craze. They have suffered erosion of tooth enamel because of it. Their teeth also take on a hollow appearance. If you want to use a squeeze or two of lemon that is fine, but don’t use half a lemon in one glass of water. The citric acid will wear away your enamel, especially if you drink it with warm water. If you insist on drinking lemon water anyway, make sure you use only cold water, wait at least 1 hour after drinking the lemon water to brush your teeth, and use a straw to drink it to minimize the contact it has with your teeth.

I too was skeptical I hadent ever added an apple or cucumber to a smoothie, almost didn’t but I figured if you had done all the leg work I should give it a try. Boy was I surprised, it is so good! Tomorrow I will try it without banana. I did get 32oz when I was finished maybe I packed the spinach really tight, idk.

    Good question Mary- no it isn’t. It’s something more substantial usually with almond milk or coconut water, with some sort of added healthy fat and protein source. You can check out my smoothie page for some other ideas.

    I just have a HUGE question, if you could please be so kind to message me back on this! I’m a very weird person, I have HIGH texture issues, I’ve never liked applesauce, cottage cheese, pudding, jello ect. Not because of their taste, but because of their texture, is there ANY way at all possible to get this smoother? I just tried it today, and it tastes wonderful, and it’s a must in my diet because of my internal problems that I have, and is required by a doctor. I have tried 3 other smoothies, and the ones at the stores are too high in sugar and too pricey. So ANYTHING I can do to make this smoother, PLEASE let me know. Thankyou!!!

    You can try leaving out the apple and just sweetening additionally with stevia as needed? Otherwise, you might want to buy a juicer. That would be the perfect solution for your texture issues.

    I made this today and it was great! Normally I just eat a baggie of dry cereal at my desk. I was able to drink this all morning. I’m so happy to be getting some fruits & veggies in my diet earlier in the day. For tomorrow’s smoothie I threw in a handful of frozen raspberries and it tastes sooo yummy! (I am omitting the banana to keep down calories) Thank you so much!

    Inspired by both you and a google search for how to make the glowing green smoothie taste better, I made this with one stalk of celery (I did not have cucumber) and a handful of frozen berries and it is a um, glowing brown smoothie. I just read the bit about the Photoshop.

    What is the bright yellow thing in your blender? Do you put the lemon in with the peel? I decided to peel the lemon and put half in without juicing it, and that seems to have worked quite well. I think the white bits in the lemon are supposed to be healthy.

    I also only added half of a small banana to minimize sugar. It’s not bad, and I will try it every morning for as long as I can stand it. I turned myself off smoothies after months of spinach-banana-chocolate smoothies but I was much healthier while drinking them.

    The white bits in lemon are really healthy. The yellow thing in the background is a banana just to show there is banana in it. I juice the lemon with a citrus juicer before I add it to my smoothie. And your smoothie will be more or less green from day to day. It all depends on the size of your fruit, etc. Sometimes my smoothie is a beautiful green and other times it is brownish-green. Either way, it is still wonderful for your body! Good luck!

    Oatmeal is great for you, but will make this much heavy. It’s a lot in your stomach as it is. If you are looking to make this more substantial or last in your stomach a little longer, I would suggest adding a tablespoon of ground chia seeds or flax seeds. The fiber will help sustain the energy from the smoothie without making it too heavy.

    I use fresh, but my Husband uses frozen. If you do frozen, you won’t need more than 1 cup at the very most. It’s all just a matter of preference and what you have available to you.

    I have been adding 1c of green tea (I brew a cup, let it cool and add it to the blender) to my green smoothies. This way I get that goodness as well without being too full of liquid.

    Can you use this smoothie for blast and lunch.? Then have an actual meal at dinner? Not sure if that’s enough for one’s body or not. I’m looking to lose about 10-15lbs. I’m not obese by any means but I have put some weight on from just basically eating everything lol.

    Haha, you could do that if you can manage it. I have a smoothie for breakfast and lunch, which is enough for me. Then I have something heavier for dinner. Sometimes I have a snack in between dinner and lunch.

    HOLY COW!!! This smoothie is actually delicious! I have tried other green things like the Naked Green Machine juice or other green smoothies, and I always thought that I would never like anything with vegetables in it. To me, a smoothie is a fruit smoothie like the classic strawberry/banana smoothie, no vegetables what-so-ever! But I wanted to try something that would get me closer to having the daily amount of vegetables without trying too hard. I found this recipe on pinterest and now I can’t stop raving about it! Thank you so much for experimenting and coming up with a great recipe!

    Hi! I just made one of your smoothies and I LOVE it. i followed your instructions but mine came out to be 35-40 oz. The apple was pretty big but I only used half of a banana. Is the recipe meant for 2 people? I saw that it serves 1, but mine was definitely enough for 2.

    The size varies completely. Everything I make it, it turns out a different color and size. It all just depends on the fruits and vegetables you use that day. If you find it too big, you can always split it with someone or refrigerate it and save some for later (stir well! It will settle sitting there)

    The size always varies depending on the fruit and vegetables you use. One day you may have a larger apple than another or a more packed handful of spinach, etc. No two days are ever the same for me.

    It’s great you’re inspiring so many people! I’m on long term steroids and a whole bunch of other meds for lupus and have finally found something for losing weight! I use pretty much the same recipe and add 1 scoop of vegan protein shake powder – recommended by a great doctor. I use a magic bullet blender.

    I tried the smoothie for the first time. I opted out of the banana. However, I have only drank a little over a half cup and I am very full feeling. Is this normally how it goes when you first start. Also, what type if apples did you use. I used Gala ones and they are a little grainy.

    Yes, feeling full is normal. It’s a lot of liquid and fiber. You don’t need to drink it all if it is too much for you. Eventually your stomach will get used to the feeling though. And I just use whatever I have on hand for apples. Maybe try Braeburn or something else?

    Any smoothie works for lunch! I usually try to have something more substantial for lunch with added fats and protein. And I ALWAYS include a serving of at least 1 vegetable. Take a look at my smoothie page for some ideas. Good luck!

    I LOVE these smoothies. I’ve been drinking them for a week now but two days ago a bumpy rash appeared on my neck. I know I’m not allergic to anything because they’re all things I eat already. Do you have any experience with this? If it’s a detox thing, how long should it last? Ps- I’m still eating “normal” food otherwise lol

    A trick I’ve used for smoothies if you’re looking to cut out some fruit and keep it packed with veggies…sprinkle a little Crystal Lite powder in. It adds fruity flavor with no calories and there’s no need for additional sugar substitute :-)

    This may be a stupid question, but I was a little confused about the baby spinach part you added under the recipe. What kind of spinach are you using for the majority of this smoothie? I just grabbed a container of baby spinach at the store and have been using that for mine (started making them this week and I am HOOKED!). As I was re-reading over the recipe just now, though, I saw where you say you now add 3 oz. of baby spinach. Should I be using a different kind of spinach (in addition to the baby spinach), or is it okay to use baby spinach for the whole thing?

    Thank you for this recipe…it is so good! Like I said, I just started making them this week, but I have felt so much better. I feel like I have more energy and my body just feels “good.” Anyway, thank you for sharing!

    Baby spinach has a more mild taste for those that prefer a less “leafy” tasting smoothie. Mature spinach actually has more nutrients though.

    The type of blender you use is actually really important. Some blenders don’t create very smooth consistencies which can make for a pretty unpleasant experience… haha. I have a vitamix.

    I drink a smoothie every day at lunch consisting of spinach, kale, chard (power greens in a bag), cucumber, half a carrot, frozen banana, blueberries, cherries, raspberries, pomegranate extract, Trader Joes Red Drink Powder and almond milk. It winds up being around 350 or so calories. If I add chia seeds its around 400 cal and 16 ounces. If I want to maintain my weight (not lose) as I have to consume 1700 cal a day, do you think I should also eat something in addition to the smoothie?

    Hi there, I am in major need of something to get me jumpstarted to loose weight, I just had my 2nd baby 7 weeks ago and I’ve started back to the Weight Watcher eating which has helped me not be a jerk and eat everything while I’m home, however, I’m only loosing like 2 pounds since June 1 and I’m highly irritated. I know I need something else something more regular and daily, so I thought with all of this “shakeology” stuff out there that surely I could find something comparable without joining a membership to get it. Would you mind sharing how much weight you lost while incorporating into your daily routine? And do you loose weight easily anyway? Just curious because I’m always gaining more than loosing it seems.     I was so excited to try this smoothie this morning with my new Ninja blender! Its delicious – put in some whey protein and HALF a banana. BUT – I soon realized this was too much for my single serve attachment. Made it in the big blender and got 56oz! Any suggestions on what to adjust? And what to do with the remaining 38 oz of smoothie? Oh, it does taste great – thank you!

    You can easily store it in the fridge or freeze it. But the texture will be drastically different as the fiber sits and soaks up the liquid… I would just cut everything in half and drink it fresh.

    DELISH! I’m trying to get 2-3 servings of fruits/veggies in at breakfast and I get so tired of chewing! (lol) I thought I’d look for a smoothie to make things go a little faster. This is perfect. I’m not using the banana and all I had this morning was lemon juice from concentrate. [NOTE: Whoa! Might use less than 1/2 cup if using lemon juice from a bottle and not a real lemon - this is like drinking STRONG lemonade! But maybe that's what I'm liking??]
    I also used unsweetened Almond Milk and no added sweeteners. It’s great! Thank you so much for posting this. I’m hoping to get brave enough to try your “advanced version” ;)

    I make my drinks in AM as well, but I add coconut water along with your ingred.
    How I got on your site, I had asked question : my daughter gets pain in her kidneys everytime I make her the drink. Why do you think that is?
    She hasn’t had a bowel movement in days. I think that’s what it’s all about. What do you think?

    I definitely think it is because of her GI tract being stopped up. GI distress can cause some serious pain. She may need a stool softener. This may be too much fiber for her to take in if she is not used to it. It is generally recommended with high fiber foods, to gradually increase consumption to avoid GI distress (like with beans). I hope she feels better soon!

    I was wondering if you have only used red apples for these or can you also use green apples ? if you have used green apples – does it still taste good ? I’m doing a lot of research before I make these and prepare my fruit beforehand. I have a green apple tree that just picked a bunch of apples off and was going to freeze them, and use for later and thru the winter to save me money. However all the recipes I find say just “apple” so I was just wondering if you could help me ?

    The red apple will make it sweeter. The green apple, assuming they are granny smith, will make it more tart. That is the only factor to consider, so basically it is a matter of personal preference. I am sure your own apples would work wonderfully!

    I don’t usually read or leave comments, but i felt compelled to share! I love doing green smoothies with the nutribullet, and a lot of people seem to have trouble with the veggies. I love the benefits of using spinach, kale, and celery but hate the flavor! The only thing I’ve found granny smith apples. It COMPLETELY hides the celery! I like to do those veggies, berries, an apple of course, and greek yogurt for texture and protein. Delicious, and soo good for you!

    It makes quite a bit. Probably more than you are used to. Try and drink it all, but if you can’t, no big deal. Save the rest in the fridge for later. Just be sure to stir it really well because it will separate.

    I’m so glad I found this recipe! I had jaw surgery in January, however I was able bypass the liquid diet. Despite the fact I had stocked up on frozen fruit, protein shakes, etc. I still have the braces on; so I have extreme soreness after a tightening. Now I have a great green smoothie for these days! Did I mention my best friend gets married in Hawaii in December; so the weight loss is a huge plus too!

    Next time I’ll be lightly scooping out the seeds from the cucumber. My blender didn’t quite get them all. Also, I used baby kale instead of spinach. First ever green smoothie. I have some spinach for these too. Also, I used green tea I cold brewed (unsweetened) for the water. I hate tea, but I can’t tell at all! And a little fresh pineapple too!

    Hello! I hit my goal of losing 50lbs in June 2013. Since then, I’ve gotten into a serious relationship, work got very busy, I moved, and I’ve been a total slacker. I’ve gained almost 20lbs back. I want to try this because it makes sense! In all honesty, will this boost me up and help me shed these nearly 20lbs? I know I need to get back to healthier eating and working out as well but I need a jump-start… will this do it?

    It will help cleanse your body and lower your calorie intake for sure. But that will all be to no avail if the rest of your diet is working against it. Make sure that you are eating as clean as possible and keep your portion sizes reasonable so as to avoid access calorie intake. So, of course I can’t guarantee weight loss- but this is definitely worth a try!! The cleaner your body is, the easier it is to lose weight!

    How much should i consume? 10oz? You said that it makes 16-20 oz, is that okay to split with my girlfriend. Or i should drink the entire amount?

    You can split it if you’d like. Sometimes it takes a while to get used to drinking the whole smoothie. Personally, I would try to work up to consuming the whole thing individually though.

    I’m not sure about freezing anything but the banana. But I know that you can definitely do like a weeks worth and place them in individual ziplock bags in the fridge.

    I tried this recipe and i can say im pretty satisfied! Of course i altered some measurements, replaced water with unsweetened almond milk, omitted bananas and actually tastes pretty good! I didnt even need a whole lot of fruits to make it taste sweet and my smoothie turned out to look really healthy green. Now to see if i get all the benefits this says i would:D

    Fresh is best since it will have all those detox properties. There isn’t much but vitamin C in the bottle stuff.

    Yes! Definitely. I made the switch to kale months ago. Eventually you get used to the taste of greens and going up to the next healthiest green, with the stronger flavor is a real possibility!

    I love smoothies, but I do not think adding a banana is bad. Actually I lost a lot of weight recently when I started eating natural foods like potatoes and bananas, and cut way down on prepackaged ones like bread.

    I drink this smoothie without anything else, accept the tall glass of lemon water that I sweeten with stevia. First I drink the lemon water upon getting up in the morning. Then later, usually at least an hour later, sometimes more, once I really feel hungry, I make my smoothie. And then I have a different, more hearty- fat and protein heavy- smoothie for lunch. For dinner I just eat whatever I want as long as it is vegan. I know losing weight after a baby can be frustrating, but just stick with it- you can do it!

    A bowl of oatmeal would help fill you up and keep you full longer if you are worried. Or you could add a scoop of plant-based protein powder. I use Sunwarrior Protein.

    Does it matter whay type of apple I use? Used granny smith this morning loved the smoothie! Also wondering does it make a difference if I peel the cucumber first and the apple? Thanks for this recipe!!!

    You can use whatever apple you’d like. Using Granny Smiths create a smoothie that is lower in sugar. Personally I prefer red apples. And peeling the cucumber or apple is up to you- you will lose nutritional value though.

    Yeah, I’ve made it with a Ninja before too and I know exactly what you mean. The blenders don’t even compare. My vitamix 5200 was about $500. But I use it at least twice a day, very often more, so it was totally worth the investment for me. Blentec is also a great blender and slightly cheap at roughly $400, depending on where you get it.

    I love this smoothie! But I think I may be doing something different. It seems to me that when make it, it yields 2 servings. It fills my 36 ounce mason jar tumbler and still have left overs. I follow the the quantities to a T. Is it normal for it to yield that much?

    Yes, it yields A LOT. It may be overwhelming at first, but eventually you get used to it and drink every drop. Especially, if that is all you have until lunch… you wanna every bit you can get. But if you’re stomach is just too uncomfortable with that amount of liquid, then you can save any leftover smoothie for later (just stir it well because it separates) or cut the quantities in half.

    One quick question!

    When you say frozen it fresh fruit that you have put in the freezer, or fruit that you buy frozen from the store? The photos look like fresh fruit, so i just wanted to be sure!

    I picked up kale instead of spinach. How much will that effect the taste? Do you recommend I stick with spinach?

    Spinach has a much more delicate taste than kale so it is great for beginners. Personally, if I have it available, I ALWAYS go with kale because it has even more nutrients and benefits to it. I’d say, just try the kale- you might not mind the taste! Start with just a handful and work your way up from there.

    I am drinking my variation (orange juice instead of lemon and blueberries instead of strawberries) as I write this, and loving it… It’s quite a lot of liquid though – do you drink the whole smoothie in one sitting?

    Hi! I’m a college student and I’m trying really hard to find healthier breakfast options. However, I usually work long shifts (7-2, 7-5) and normally don’t get to eat again until noon or so. I need something that’ll keep me full which is why I usually stick to bagels but I know all of that bread can be bad for you.
    Is there something I can add on with this smoothie, like toast with nut butter, or an egg, or something that’ll still held me loose weight and be a healthier option?
    I’m trying really hard just to change my eating habits bc I really want to lose some weight, and I’m a huge breakfast person so I don’t know where to start lol

    Wow this sounds so amazing! I just had my first baby 8 months ago and now I’m working on getting back in shape and getting in a routine that will help me lose 33lbs while also breast feeding.     I’m about 2 years behind the curve but wanted to let you know I just started drinking this smoothie and I LOVE it! I am a surgical nurse so I am at work by 6:30 am and find breakfast difficult. This is perfect–I freeze in muffin tins and then store in a freezer bag. Put them in my glass before bed and stick it in the fridge. By breakfast (usually 7:30 or 8) I have a delightful smoothie! I’m using a blender bottle to really get it defrosted and it works great. I’m even considering buying a vitamix for my new habit and silicone muffin pans to pop out the frozen pucks easier! Thanks so much!

    I have a love-hate relationship with green smoothies. “Real” green smoothies taste too earthy, and I usually opt for a fruity, not-so-healthy version; then those delicious self-called green smoothies are just sugary fruits with a dash of color. It either goes down way too easy with bad results (energy crashes and none of that beneficial skin-clearing qualities) or I have to choke down the green stuff. This smoothie? Amazing. I love that 1) the ingredients are wholesome, and all things you could/should eat separately (spinach, cucumber, apples, fruit – no dairy!) while tastes fantastic at the same time. I like that it doesn’t need banana or dairy or any kind of creamer. Also does well overnight (had it before bed and for breakfast). You are my savior, thanks for discovering and posting this recipe!

    I thought it made a lot too, so divided it into a few half pint mason jars and put the extras in the freezer for enjoying throughout the week. I pull one out of the freezer and let it defrost in the fridge overnight, shake it up the next day and chew/drink it!

    I’m looking forward to trying this. I’m wondering if it might help my eczema. Anyone have any luck with it? Also I know ginger root is good for inflammation. How much does it affect the taste? I was thinking about adding 1/4 to 1/2 inch piece to it.

    Hi there
    Is this smoothie meant to be a bit “grainy” due to the apple/cucumber? I’m used to silky smooth smoothies( banana berries spinach ice chia almond milk) but find ones with harder fruit/ veg like carrot, apple, beetroot can be slightly grainier even with a powerful blender. Do you find this as well? Not sure if I am expecting the impossible from my blender.

    I haven’t tried this yet, though it sounds delicious. I just wanted to comment on how much I appreciate the fact that you disclosed the image was Photoshopped. I have made several other smoothies in the past, that turned out nothing like the photo. In fact, they were brown, not green! Not a big deal, it didn’t have an impact on how much I liked or didn’t like the final product, but it made me really doubt the credibility of the blogger.
